Finland's regions

The country differs from region to region - as already pointed by the distribution of the population. The country can both be divided in nature areas as well as administration regions. To open an inlarged picture of the shown maps simply click on the appropriate map.

Nature areas of Finland

South Finnish coastel area

Contrary to the rest of the country here lakes are missing nearly completely in the area between Turku and the Russian border. Rock formations interrupt the tonus and sandy plains in many places. At the south coast there are pre-aged small islands and peninsulas. The area is predominantly agriculturally used. It is the warmest area with the highest amount of trees in Finland.

Western coast area

The Bottni coastal plain follows in the middle and northern coast region the Bottni sea bosom. The area covers the province Vaasa and the western part of the province Oulu. In the south you can find meadows that are wide and divided by drainage channels, coming to the north the forest increases. Characteristical elements of this area wild rivers.

Finnish lake area

The countryside rises from the coast to the Finnish lake area. It is characterized by a typically Finnish landscape: a tangle of lakes, sea-bays, islands and peninsulas with forests. These lakes are connected by channels or natural discharges with cascades and waterfalls. The many islands are however not constantly inhabited: 6494 islands are "summer islands", only 60 islands are constantly inhabited also during the winter.

Lappland

Here you can find different landscapes. In the south, wide forests dominate. In the north, you can find open swamp, heath and tundra landscapes. Here, the Samish people breed rendeers. In the northwest there are the most impressive mountains. The highest Finnish mountain is the Haltiantunturi (1,324 m).
